Destination: Gatikallu, Chikkamagaluru

Pretty now and then I use words like monotony, boredom, life goals, practicality, life's purpose etc. So many happenings in life, so many ups and downs, so many reasons for laziness and procrastination and yet the heart still keeps murmuring "Take Me Anywhere".Boredom is the most dreadful ordeal that we have in front of us. We experience months of grapple and scuffle that forces the heart to say "Take Me Anywhere". So with all the might and will we need to wage the war against the boredom by sea, land and air. All that went through my mind was victory, victory and victory at all costs. However long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival.

As the time was perfect(or maybe I thought so) and heart was repetitively murmuring, I quickly said yes when a bunch of office buddies planned a trip to Chikkamagaluru. For I always wanted to visit the Tea Estates in the Western Ghats and this was the time. Since everyone chooses to visit Mullayyanagiri, Bababudangiri, Honnammana halla, Kemmanagundi etc., we chose the unconventional itinerary. We decided to go to Gatikallu. We started at 11:00 PM from Bengaluru and took a break at a CCD on the Highway towards Hassan. What took us by surprise was the foggy roads at 03:00 AM on a Summer night. Our Michael Schumacher had no plans of halting until the view on the roads is clear. He drove us like crazy with our heart in mouth, we did trust his driving skill only with presentiment to reach the place safe and sound.

Chikkamagaluru takes its name from Kannada Chikkamagaḷa ūru that translates to "younger daughter's town". It is said to have been given as a dowry to the youngest daughter of Rukmangada, the legendary chief of Sakharayapattana.

Gatikallu Homestay is spread out over 100 acres of coffee, pepper and cardamom estates with an enchanting stream cutting right through. Waking up to a dreamland like this is enchanting. The painting that I made in my childhood appeared to be real for the first time. The mountains, some houses, pets around it, beautiful trees, some vehicles, the Sun rising and setting. Everything was surreal. Had I not gone, the regret would house for a long time.

The hospitality at the homestay is indeed great. 11 of us checked in on a Friday morning. When I say, Friday Morning that itself is a blissful feeling. The breathtaking view from the place we stayed in was jaw-dropping one. Somehow, none of us realized, that we were gazing at the mountains as we finally waged a war against the monstrous tyranny called monotony(boredom) without getting into our respective rooms. Chikkamagaluru is a land of Coffee and Tea estates. Having said that, you are in for a surprise when the Coffee arrives. The best coffee I have ever had, no CCD or a Restaurant would match this. Relishing the taste buds with the native foods like Kai Kadabu, Kori Rotti, Dose and a variety of non-vegetarian foods(at least I thought my friends enjoyed it) right on top of a mountain, amidst the coffee estate is another reason for Happiness.

The homestay provided multiple activities in our booking and we were made to feel home. Our first activity on the first day was Trekking. So we made our way to the ghats. All of us got into an open Jeep and the journey began, the curves on the ghats are so sharp that even a flaunting super model will be in for a surprise.

Our first stop after a good 30 minutes 4*4 drive was at Kalabhairava Temple. A magically small and beautiful old temple in the middle of a jungle. This temple is said to be 900 years old.

After the temple visit, we made our way towards Ballarayanadurga. Gatikallu is a 2000+ feet tall "One rock Mountain" with one of the most stunning views of the valley below in the World. Gatikallu derives its name from the most beautiful spot on Ballarayanadurga.

I haven't been a trekking enthusiast earlier and I paid for not being enough prepared. That only makes me warn people to be trek-ready before the next one. Trust me, one wrong step while walking down the steep mountain and I walked barefoot all the way down. Ensure to carry at least 1 right kind of footwear for trek unlike me who carried 3 pairs, none of which were helpful. Honestly, it is frantic when you look down and realize you could be dead with one wrong move. But also, if you are careful and zestful it is the most liberating feeling when you are on the cliff.

Post trekking, the next destination was a beautiful waterfall. After another 20 minutes of a humpy bumpy 4*4 ride we reached this remote place. Since it is not crowded, you will get all the time and space to enjoy only with your lunatic gang. This small waterfall beautiful in its own way. The plunge is of a smaller height. However the water is sufficient for a good time to relax.

Somehow, the water games make me feel hungry like I have been starving for ages. Only because of hunger, we chose to leave the water fall. The next activity was Kayaking. My first time and opportunity to fight hydrophobia. I'm generally a stay-away-from-water person. But this man-made lake is so beautiful that I forced myself for Kayaking. After a good joyous kayaking session, I jumped into the water with a life jacket on.

Overcoming the biggest fears is the best thing you can do to yourself ☺ I'm glad I did!

A good sumptuous meal after the day long hard work is what the tummy demands. We quickly hogged all the food that was served. We went for relaxing. Take bath, sit outside and just watch the serenity. My eyes could never thank me enough for being at this place. In the evening, the next activity was going to Sunset point. But we chose to be where we were. It was no less than a magic to watch the sun returning from my zone to another.

While girls chose to do some crazy photography during sunset, the guys settled down to sleep.

The nights are calm. Usually, only the music that plays is heard. Even though the wild animals are in the region, none were spotted. The campfire was setup at night. A lot of snacks, party music and a lot of gossips. It surprised me how even the guys get into gossiping mode with the girls around. A game called CONTACT. Somehow the game was getting more and more interesting until real late. We chose to have dinner post the game. Another course of meal and time to hit the bed.

No trip is complete without the ghost stories. The 2 other members stole the show with their stories. I regret having not taken that slot for myself :P Lol :P And that's it every girl on the trip was shivering and chased the story tellers out. I slept well that night. We had other plans for next day. Next morning, we all geared to get ready quickly and start from there for the love of Tea Estates. If not only for photographs I would still go and enjoy the Tea estates. We went to Kelaguru Tea Estates spread across more than 200 acres on either side of the hills. The enticing view on either side with tea estates is the soul soothing experience. The factory was supposedly set up during the British Era. It stands still, high and firm on top of the hill. We visited with the tickets and got an overview of the Tea powder manufacturing unit. 12 types of tea powder are made at their factory. Just an amazing thing to watch.

We departed the place by noon with the plan to reach Bangalore by late evening. With sufficient breaks for Jackfruit, Mango, Sugarcane juice and a final stop at CCD. We safely reached Bangalore by 9, after requesting Mr Michael Schumacher for the 1000th time to drive slow and safe.

Note: Summer is not the right time for any type of trips usually. But somehow most of my trips happen only during this time. Ensure to be Summer ready before you go. Trust me, as I finish writing this piece I have searched at least 100 articles and videos on youtube with keywords "How to remove tan quickly"

Victory, victory and victory, for without victory, there is no survival!!

Signing Off with a promise to return with yet another story!

Love,
V

Why should Pondicherry be your next destination?

Of late, I have been a lot vulnerable to situations around me. Getting over, be it monotony or person or situations or work is a little less easier. My heart was screaming aloud once again - Take Me Anywhere. I could not resist but agree to it. I suddenly realized, there is something long pending on my Wish List. "A Solo Trip"!

I started browsing for places that are safe for solo woman travelers. I surprisingly found that there are a good number of places that allow a woman to be at her best and ease with utmost safety. That was like icing on the cake. All I can say about my travel stories is, I have never been allowed to go on trips with friends. I always traveled with family and cousins. Now that I decided to go solo, I need permissions to do so. I called around 6 times in 10 minutes to get approval. It was a BIG NO, NO! I was even told, not to call again about the same.  The 7th time I called, I said - I'll take half lemon along with me. Approved! Partially Solo as it was half lemon along.

Booked my tickets and a hotel room. That was a big moment of relief. I knew am finally going to travel. It took me a week to figure out what am I going to explore in the town. Google, Friends, Blogs, Quora and what not? That kind of helped me. Soon after my tickets were booked, one of my friends was vacationing in Pondy with her family, that helped me too. My plan was for 2 days and I exactly knew what I was going to do there.

Pondicherry or Puducherry or Pondy is a Union territory of India. It lies in the southeast part of India in the state of Tamil Nadu. A very beautiful place for a perfect weekend getaway. My visit to Pondy was a memorable one and below are some of the glimpses.

Day 1: Checked-in at Hotel South Avenue, Pondicherry.  It is a friendly place, they provided me with the map and a slip that had the places to visit with highlights that are on the right side and left side of the hotel respectively. They insisted me to hire a 2-wheeler to go around the town. I instantly refused with a smile and said - I don't ride. The receptionist said I don't know how have you been managing all these days without riding. He looked at half lemon and said, at least she should learn by the time she joins college. I looked at half lemon and laughed out louder.

Started my way towards the Promenade beach, when I rode 50m from my hotel I started wondering if I was on the right direction. Half lemon insisted on using Navigation and we followed it calmly. We saw the huge bunch of foreign travelers going in a line of cycle rickshaws. Each one of them were so friendly and joyous, they waved at us, clicked pictures and moved. When all of them got down from their cycle rickshaw, we managed to reach the beach too. They clicked a few more pictures of us and so did we. The beach here is called as rock beach as rocks lay on the shore with all the happiness in the world. They get to hear each wave that hit them every minute, they listen to the stories that the waves bring in each time. Also, they allow the people to rest on them and listen to the waves. They are beautiful in their own way.

Happy French couple on their way to Promenade

As we walked on the shore along the rocks, a lot of visitors passed by us. Amongst all, what caught my attention more was a group of college going guys and girls. Each one of them being a couple and walking hand in hand. They stared at us and one couple approached us. The girl said - "Semma Beautiful!" I looked at HL and she said that means "Very Beautiful" in the local language(3 months Chennai effect). HL started beaming with pride that she knew something, which I failed to understand. I then started thinking what was that she called as beautiful? My Hat? Dress? Camera? Sling Bag? Or this tiny half lemon? I assumed it to be half lemon. The girl asked me my name and I said, Suzi. She said beautiful again. I said thank you and walked ahead.

Rock Beach/Promenade Beach

Along the seaside are French War Memorial, Gandhi Statue, Marques Dupleix Statue, DOM Sub Invocatione Domina Angelorum Church, Nehru Statue, Manakkula Vinayagar Temple, Aurobindo Ashram, the very beautiful French colony, Bharati Park. Etc. All these can be covered in a days' time.  Visit the local handicrafts stores to buy the Candles, Soaps, Powder Soap, Hats, Earrings and leather items. These are special from the town. This place is also known for it's popularity in movies like Talaash and Life of Pie.

Pondi is known for its heritage. Highly French-inspired town with beautiful French colony. The evenings are perfectly quiet, peaceful and  serene. Dainty Cafes and Calm beaches invite the visitors with arms wide open. It's a heaven for foodies and double delight if you love French Cuisine.

Cycling around French Colony

I took a heritage tour around the  French Colony by walk. I parked my bicycle and chose to walk as I wanted an experience with every minute detail from this gorgeous town. Aurobindo Ashram is something beyond my thoughts. People all over the world come in search of Peace here. Talking about the foreign visitors, most of them are beautifully dressed in Indian Cotton clothes, while the Indians here are more westernized. The Ashram houses the Samadhi of Shri Aurobindo and Mother. The place is highly maintained when it comes to cleanliness. The localites are very cooperative and kind. Ask for help and you get it. Auto rickshaw guys talk in a reasonably good English and one can easily manage.

Evenings are so beautiful here that, one falls in love with the place. Take long walks on the seaside, see if you don't find peace. I envy those who stay there all the while, well I'm much aware of the fact that every place has its own perks.  I sat by the shore, loved watching the waves and enjoyed looking at the kids blowing bubbles occasionally. Everything is magical, the roads are busy in the evening people of all the age group dwell there for a good number of hours.

I quickly made my way to The Indian Kaffe House, my friend insisted me to go there. She reminded me multiple times and said I'm not supposed to miss that place. Well, it was beyond my expectations. It offers a variety of snacks, shakes, and Coffees. My quick pick was Ferrero Rocher shake, Pancake with Maple Syrup and French Fries (the best I've ever had). You should probably be trying it. To add to it was WT20 Indo-Pak Match, I watched a part of it at Café and then reached my hotel just before the match resumed after rains. What more can one ask to complete the day?

Day2: My next day at Pondy is as memorable as Day 1. I hired a local Auto rickshaw to reach Auroville. The thing  I like the most about it is that it belongs to none any in particular. It belongs to Humanity. Mother Mirra Alfassa found this place in 1968. It is a Universal township. A very unique golden metallic sphere is located close to the Center of Auroville, this is nothing but Matrimandir, built by Mother. This is a symbol of the Divine's answer to man's aspiration for perfection. Around 2500 people live inside Auroville, even though it is capable of housing many more.
Not every other person is allowed to enter Matrimandir, as it is typically a place to find one's consciousness and not a tourist attraction. There is a beach close to it known as Auro Beach. More about the City of Dawn here.

 Matrimandir

My next visit was to Chunnumbar Boating Camp. This is yet another scenic place. A good 20 minutes Boating took us to something known as Paradise Beach. The name is so apt, I say. One of those beaches to get inside the water. The water here is so calm and serene. After I thoroughly enjoyed the beach, I took a boat back to the Chunnumbar Camp.

Apart from everything else are these beautiful churches that are here. They are old and amazingly beautiful. Every Church has its own uniqueness. The evening lights make them look much more beautiful. All the 4 of them are not just buildings but God's House. The Bharati Park and Botanical Garden are just around the City. Bharati Park being my favorite over the Botanical Garden which is nothing more than a Toy Train station.

The last part of my stay was Shopping at Pondicherry. However, I'm not too much of a shopping person. But yeah, the options here are abundant. The handicrafts are so carefully done, yet they are reasonably priced. The candles, soaps and cologne are a must. Street shopping for people who love accessories is another nice thing to do. The city is also popular for cotton fabrics and is known as a home for HIDESIGN and other leather items.

Before I checked-out of the Hotel, Half lemon told the Manager of the Hotel that she ain't a half lemon errr.. or School going kid. She smartly conveyed that she works in an IT Firm. The Manager looks at me and raises his eye brows, I just smiled and said Bye to the staff.

Everything about this place makes my heart yell out 'Take me there again!!' It was a little like soloing! I gathered a tons of memories from here in the form of pictures. And now I fall short of words to describe this City of Dawn!

Signing off only with a promise to comeback with another blog!

Nandi Hills : A Walk through Clouds!

Wikipedia says "Travel is the movement of people between relatively distant geographical locations, and can involve travel by foot, bicycle, automobile, train, boat, airplane, or other means, with or without luggage, and can be one way or round trip.Travel can also include relatively short stays between successive movements."

Traveling to the place you like is always an exciting journey. Why I made this statement is, because I travel for around 3 hours collectively every day to my work place and back home. This has never been any exciting journey to me, reason being I don't quiet like traveling there everyday. This makes life monotonous. Well, I love to travel elsewhere, with all those conditions as stated by Wikipedia above; with people, place and mode of travel of my choice.

Once, a lady I admire the most as my Icon, quoted this "Whenever My Job sucks, I take shelter in My Family; Whenever I have personal crisis,I take refuge at my work". It took me a while to  figure out what she actually meant. As simple as it is. She put my life into ease, all that she said was so true. Ever since then, through the dunes of life, I blindly take refuge in the other. My family and friends come to rescue more than often.

Of late, I crib about almost everything on earth. To get out of the monotonous life, I said "Take Me Anywhere"

Drive towards Nandi  Hills.

Journey that started as a result of "Take Me Anywhere" was towards a heavenly place called Nandi Betta. Nandi Hills was said to be Tippu Sultan's Summer rest house and fort. There are a couple of Hindu temples on the hill, I was taken by a little surprise, since the fort once belonged to A Muslim King. But this did not persist longer as the "The Tiger of Mysore" had many Hindu temples all across the Kingdom of Mysore.

Crazy bunch of people.

A pit stop!

If you are a morning person and you like going places, this is a must visit. It is situated at a distance of 10 km from Chikkaballapur town and approximately 60 km from the city of Bangalore.

Life appears to be so beautiful here. We walked through the clouds. The drive uphill is freaking crazy, misty way and clouds all around. We create memories through pictures. And this is truely heaven for photographers, models and not to forget the Facebook freaks ;)

Towards the Hilltop

Destination : Heaven on Earth

An experience of Life Time. A walk to remember - A walk through Clouds.

Happy Cloud Walking!!
